Community Hearts & Hands: A Recap of the Open Up Resources 2025 Give Back Day

At Open Up Resources, we believe that care is an essential part of how communities thrive and a part of who we are. That’s why every year, on the anniversary of our founding, Open Up Resources team members across the country take part in Give Back Day—dedicated to supporting the places in which we live and the people who live there.

Here’s how a few of our incredible staff chose to give back in 2025:

1. Cydney Turner: Field Trip Chaperone Extraordinaire
Cydney spent the day volunteering as a chaperone for her son’s 4th grade class trip to the skating rink. Supporting students and educators—both in and out of the classroom—is what we’re all about!

2. Cathy Dickson: Lending a Hand at New Life Resale and Donation Center
Cathy volunteered at the New Life Resale and Donation Center and shared, “I am amazed at the efforts they put forth to support community needs. Proud to work for an org who gives us the opportunity to give back.”

3. Dan Lindsay: Building for Better Learning
Using scrap wood from his garage, Dan built a mobile raised garden bed—complete with a foldable shelf—for his son’s classroom. A perfect blend of sustainability and support for hands-on learning!

4. Rachel Martinez: Supporting Teachers with Houston Loves Teachers
Rachel teamed up with Houston Loves Teachers to meet with the executive team and deliver free lunches to educators at two Houston ISD high schools. Supporting those who support students—that’s the Open Up way.

Additionally, Rachel joined Open Up Resources CEO Jason Isaacs at Believe, the signature fundraising event hosted by the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC). This powerful annual gathering supports survivors of domestic and sexual violence and celebrates HAWC’s continued leadership and the opening of their new 5.5-acre flagship campus.

5. Alexis LaVacca: Advocating for Maternal Health
Alexis devoted her time to planning the 2025 Long Island Promise Walk for Preeclampsia, a cause close to her heart. As chairperson, she edited fliers, contacted sponsors and performers, and visited local businesses to promote this important event supporting the Preeclampsia Foundation.

6. Hailey Wallace: Cooking for Community (and Their Pets!)
In rural Maine, Hailey and her family cooked and delivered dinners to elderly neighbors—along with unseasoned chicken for their dogs. “We don’t have a lot of close neighbors,” she said, “but we take care of the ones we do have.”

7. Meg Marks: Craft Time with Fifth Graders
Meg joined her husband’s 5th grade class to lead a fun and festive Spring craft project, bringing joy and creativity into the school day.

From classrooms to communities, our team continues to show up with compassion, creativity, and care. We’re proud of how they chose to give back—and we’re already looking forward to next year!
