Science of Reading: Fall Workshop Series

*90-minute sessions begin at 7–8:30pm ET. All event times are Eastern Time Zone.

• Session 1: Building Strong Literacy Foundations (October 28)
  This session will focus on the foundational skills necessary for reading and writing success, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and oral language development. Explore how these components interact and contribute to students’ ability to decode, spell, and comprehend text. The session will also highlight the importance of structured literacy instruction and the role of language acquisition in literacy development.
• Session 2: Understanding and Applying the Science of Reading to Comprehension (October 29)
  Explore how skilled reading develops and the cognitive processes that support comprehension. Dive into key research findings on how background knowledge, vocabulary, fluency, and text structure impact reading proficiency. Analyze common barriers to comprehension and discuss how instructional practices, such as explicit vocabulary instruction, scaffolding for complex texts, and discussion-based strategies, can improve students’ reading outcomes. 

• Session 3:  The Connection Between Reading and Writing in Literacy Development (October 30)
  Learn more about the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing and how both contribute to overall literacy development. Examine how explicit writing instruction supports comprehension, deepens content knowledge, and fosters critical thinking. Participants will explore instructional routines for developing students’ writing fluency, organization, and ability to use evidence effectively in their writing.
