How a Large, Urban District Set the Stage for a Successful Open Up Math Implementation in Grades 6-12

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is a large, urban Tennessee school district with a vision to offer a personalized education for every child, or make: “Every Student Known.” MNPS established a strong vision for mathematics instruction, setting the stage for an effective district-wide, mandatory implementation of Open Up Math across all of its 31 middle schools and 18 high schools during the 2023-2024 school year.

MNPS used a“leadership matters” approach, prioritizing the leadership capacity needed to empower teachers to effectively implement Open Up Resources Math.

After Year 1, MNPS leaders report early improvements in teacher materials use, as well as early shifts in student productive struggle and engagement, resulting in an increase of students scoring Meets or Exceeds Expectations on math tests. Next steps include a focus on implementation integrity that is driven by principals, who are better equipped to support math instruction than ever before.
