Dr. Lateefah Id-Deen

Lateefah Id-Deen is an Associate Professor at Kennesaw State University, a mathematics teacher educator, author, speaker, and consultant. She earned her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. At the heart of her mission is a commitment to cultivating inclusive and equitable mathematics classrooms. She is the co-author of Disrupting Injustice: Mathematics Educators in Critical Moments, a recent book that explores how teachers navigate and respond to moments of inequity and injustice in their classrooms and schools. She also co-authored Mathematics Lessons to Explore, Understand, and Respond to Social Injustice: Middle School and has written for Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK–12 (MTLT), Mathematics Teacher Educator, Urban Education, Educational Leadership, and Edutopia, among others. Lateefah works closely with curriculum developers, administrators, teacher leaders, and educators to incorporate culturally responsive practices into mathematics instruction. Her approach emphasizes strong student-teacher relationships, affirmation of diverse math identities, and trauma-informed practices that foster belonging. Her scholarship has been recognized nationally, including the 2022 Kay Gilliland Equity Award and her appointment to the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction. Her work reflects a passion for creating math learning environments where all students feel seen, supported, and capable of thriving.
