EL Education Launches K–2 2024 Reading Foundational Skills Block, a Structured Phonics Curriculum, in Partnership with Open Up Resources

EL Education, a national nonprofit K–12 educational publisher, proudly announces the launch of the GK–2 2024 Reading Foundational Skills Block, a structured phonics curriculum. Designed to help students crack the alphabetic code and achieve grade-level reading proficiency, the 2024 Skills Block is deeply rooted in the Science of Reading and is now available through our partner Open Up Resources for the 2024 / 25 school year.

The 2024 Skills Block curriculum is based on Dr. Linnea Ehri’s Phase Theory and is further refined into microphases, which sequentially teach letter-sound connections and spelling-sound patterns in a clear scope and sequence. This updated curriculum is meticulously aligned with the latest research.

Skills Block includes all materials and lesson guidance needed for successful implementation. This robust package significantly reduces teacher prep time while ensuring instructional integrity. Key features include:

Whole Group Teacher Guides:

  • Slide decks for every lesson
  • Fluency words, phrases, and sentences
  • Phonogram and phoneme cards
  • High-frequency words
  • Whole group assessments

The Tool Kit:

  • Benchmark assessments and guidance
  • Keyword letter cards
  • Anchor charts and lesson materials

Small Group Teacher Guides:

  • Organized by microphases and cycles, not modules.
  • Teaching guides and sample lessons
  • New and larger Decodable Readers with practice pages
  • Cycle assessments

Independent Student Activities:

  • Games and learning activities
  • Guidance and differentiated materials for small group rotations

“We are excited to launch the 2024 Skills Block, offering educators a powerful tool to enhance early literacy phonics instruction,” said Scott Hartl, CEO of EL Education. “This curriculum reflects our commitment to providing research-based, high-quality educational materials that support both teachers and students and help them achieve more than they thought possible.”

Through the partnership with Open Up Resources, the 2024 Skills Block is now readily available to schools and educators nationwide, ensuring wide accessibility and support for effective literacy instruction. Jason Isaacs, Open Up Resources CEO said, “Strong phonemic awareness is a critical part of creating confident and self-sufficient readers and writers. When we empower our earliest readers, data clearly shows they are set up for success far beyond their early academic years. We are proud to partner with EL Education to bring the 2024 Skills Block to K–2 classrooms across the U.S.”
